How To Make Soft Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookies

Step 1: Combine Dry Ingredients In a medium bowl, sift or whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside for later use.

Step 2: Cream Butter and Sugar In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture becomes light and fluffy. This typically takes about 3-5 minutes.

Step 3: Add Wet Ingredients – Beat in the egg, milk and vanilla extract until the ingredients are well combined.

Step 4: Incorporate Dry Ingredients Gradually add the previously prepared dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Mix only until combined, remember to scrape the sides to ensure that all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Step 5: Chill the Dough Cover the cookie dough and refrigerate it for at least 3 hours but best overnight. Chilling the dough ensures that the cookies maintain their shape and texture during baking.

Step 6: Preheat Your Oven – Once dough has chilled and you are ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Spray baking sheets with cooking spray to prevent the cookies from sticking.

Step 7: Roll out the Dough – Sprinkle flour on a clean countertop and work dough until it is soft and easy to roll out. Using a rolling pin, roll out dough until it is 1/4″ thick. Using your choice of cookie cutter, cut out cookie dough and place on a prepared baking sheet. Be sure to leave enough space between each for slight spreading.

Step 8: Bake to Perfection – Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are slightly brown. Cookies could use more or less baking time depending on the size of the cookies. Let cookies cool for 2 minutes on the pan and then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

How to Make Soft Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookie Frosting

Mix It up – In a medium size bowl or in a stand mixer add powdered sugar, melted butter (that has cooled), vanilla, almond extract flavoring, milk and a dash of salt. Mix until combined and then add your choice of food coloring.

Storage – Cookies can be frozen in freezer Ziplock’s or an airtight container, either frosted or unfrosted. Let frozen cookies thaw for 30 minutes to an hour before enjoying! Store leftover frosting in the fridge. Be sure to set your leftover frosting on the counter for 15 minutes and give a good stir before using.

Simple Does It!

Now that you’ve followed these easy steps, you’re ready to enjoy a batch of soft Valentine’s Day sugar cookies that are bound to bring smiles to the faces of your loved ones. Embrace the joy of baking and savor the sweet moments shared with those you hold dear on this special day.
